Swimming pools are one of the best ways to get the whole family together in the back yard.
However, I was recently reading this article in Pool & Spa News magazine regarding two parents who were charged with neglect after their two children accidentally drowned in a neighbour’s pool.
It reminded me of discussions we often have here with parents at SPAS.
One of the common questions we get from concerned parents is “What can I do to make sure my pool area and back yard is safe for my small children?”
And my answer? “Supervise, supervise, supervise”
We can sell you every alarm, safety fence, gate and cover under the sun. But the ultimately the best safety feature is your own parental supervision.
We do realize that accidents happen, we’re only human. That’s why having layers of safety is so important. You deserve to feel comfortable knowing your kids are safe in your back yard.
Here in Halifax Regional Municipality we already requite a 5′ fence around the property or pool area itself and we require a self-latching gate. SOURCE
But is it enough? Here in Nova Scotia we do not have many regulations regarding pool safety.
You should ensure that the patio door/back door leading to the pool area is always locked and child proofed. As another layer of safety I recommend a safety fence installation keeping the pool off limits in case the door is left unlocked.
And as your last resort layer- we offer pool alarms. So if something or someone does enter the water you are immediately notified.
All of these products should not be used as a safety net. You shouldn’t rely on them totally. But it should help during that one where supervision is missed.
